Short answer: yes, some Los Angeles companies rent water softeners — and for most homeowners it is the more expensive way to get soft water. We do not rent softeners, and this page explains why, what renting actually costs over time, and the option most people choose once they have seen the numbers side by side.
Why people look for a rental in the first place
Almost nobody searching for a water softener rental actually wants to rent something. What they want is one of these:
- To avoid a large up-front payment. By far the most common reason.
- To not deal with maintenance. Salt, servicing, valve checks, resin — they would rather someone else owned that.
- To not be stuck with equipment if they move, or if the property is a rental.
- To avoid risk — if it breaks, they do not want a repair bill.
Those are all reasonable. The useful question is not “who rents softeners” but “which arrangement solves my actual concern for the least money.”
What renting a water softener really costs
Rental pricing varies by company, but the structure is consistent: a monthly fee, indefinitely, for equipment you never own.
The arithmetic is the part that surprises people. A softener rental is typically priced in the range of a phone bill. Run that for three years and you have usually paid more than the system costs to buy outright. Run it for ten years — well within the working life of a properly maintained softener — and you have often paid two to three times the purchase price, and you still own nothing.
A water softener is not a short-life appliance. A quality system that is serviced properly lasts a long time. That is precisely what makes renting expensive: you keep paying long after a purchase would have been finished paying for itself.
The honest exception. Renting genuinely makes sense in a few situations: you are in a property short-term, you are a tenant who cannot make a permanent installation, or you need zero capital outlay this quarter for business reasons. If that is you, renting is a legitimate choice and you should shop for it. We would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
What we recommend instead
Most people who arrive at a rental search are trying to avoid up-front cost and maintenance. You can solve both without renting.
Own the system, and put the servicing on a plan
You buy the softener — so it is yours, it adds value to the property, and the payments end. The maintenance concern is handled separately by a service plan that covers bi-monthly checkups, salt delivery, valve inspection and ongoing support. You get the hands-off experience that makes renting attractive, without paying rent forever.
This is what we offer, and it is why we do not rent softeners. We concluded it is not the better deal for the customer, and we would rather sell one system properly and service it for years.
If the up-front number is the obstacle, say so
Talk to us about it directly. There is usually a path — a smaller correctly-sized system rather than the biggest one, a salt-free conditioner if scale protection is the real goal, or phasing the work. What there is not is a reason to pay rent indefinitely because of a one-time hurdle.
What we DO rent
To be completely clear about where the line sits:
| Equipment | Rent | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Bottleless water coolers and dispensers | Yes | Yes |
| Drinking water filtration & reverse osmosis | Yes | Yes |
| Water softeners | No | Yes, with a service plan |
| Whole-house filtration | No | Yes, with a service plan |
Our cooler and filtration rentals include installation, scheduled filter changes, sanitization and repairs. That equipment genuinely suits a rental model — it is serviced frequently, upgraded periodically, and moved between spaces. A softener bolted into your main line is a different kind of asset.
Renting versus owning, side by side
| Renting a softener | Owning + service plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front cost | None | System purchase |
| Monthly cost | Ongoing, indefinitely | Service plan only |
| Total cost at 10 years | Typically 2–3x purchase price | Purchase, then servicing only |
| Who owns it | The rental company | You |
| Property value | No effect | A permanent improvement |
| Maintenance | Included | Included in the plan |
| If you move | Unit is removed | Stays as a selling point, or we relocate it |
| Best for | Short-term occupancy, tenants | Anyone staying more than about three years |
Do you even need a softener?
Worth settling before the money question. Los Angeles water is hard enough to matter, and it varies a lot by area — LADWP publishes averages from 8.6 grains per gallon in the San Fernando Valley and Western LA up to 16.3 grains per gallon in Eastern LA and the Harbor. Burbank averaged 16.6 gpg in 2024, and Glendale is classified as very hard at over 12 gpg.
Anything above 7 grains per gallon is hard; above 10 is very hard. But your street matters more than your city, which is why we test at your tap for free before recommending anything — including recommending nothing, if your reading does not justify it.
It is also worth knowing that a salt-free conditioner is a real alternative. It does not produce soft water, but it protects your plumbing and appliances from scale, needs no salt, no drain and almost no maintenance — and it costs less. If equipment protection is your actual goal rather than the soft-water feel, it may be the honest answer.

Frequently asked questions
Does Praz Pure Water rent water softeners?
No. We sell water softeners and back them with service plans covering bi-monthly checkups, salt delivery and ongoing maintenance. We do rent bottleless water coolers, dispensers and drinking water filtration systems.
Is renting a water softener cheaper than buying one?
Only in the short term. Rental fees continue indefinitely, so over the working life of the system you typically pay well beyond the purchase price and never own the equipment. Renting can make sense for short-term occupancy or for tenants who cannot make a permanent installation. For anyone staying more than about three years, buying is usually the lower total cost.
How can I avoid the up-front cost of a water softener?
Talk to us about your budget directly. Options usually include correctly sizing the system rather than over-specifying it, or choosing a salt-free conditioner if scale protection rather than soft water is the real goal. A one-time cost hurdle rarely justifies paying rent indefinitely.
Can I get a water softener if I rent my home?
You need your landlord’s permission for a permanent installation on the main water line. If that is not possible, point-of-use drinking water filtration is a good alternative and can be rented, since it installs under a sink rather than into the building’s plumbing.
What is included in a water softener service plan?
Bi-monthly checkups, salt delivery, control valve inspection, hardness testing at the tap and ongoing support. It is the hands-off experience people are usually looking for when they search for a rental, without the indefinite monthly payment.
What can I rent from Praz Pure Water?
Bottleless water coolers and point-of-use dispensers, and drinking water filtration including reverse osmosis systems. Installation, scheduled filter replacement, sanitization and repairs are included in the rental.
